At Templeton Primary School in Melbourne’s east, architecture becomes a quiet agent for transformation. Designed by Kosloff Architecture, the redevelopment of the school’s central building is rooted in purpose and care – a project that elevates the everyday experience of education through robust materials and measured form.

With a raw yet refined presence, the masonry blocks lend depth and integrity to the spatial composition.

Informed by its 1980s origins, the original building was fragmented and cellular, offering little in the way of openness or connection. Kosloff Architecture responded with a design that strips away visual clutter while introducing clarity and light. The result is a reimagined space that fosters visibility, inclusivity and delight – hallmarks of contemporary pedagogy.

A key feature of the design is its use of GB Masonry from Brickworks. Applied internally and externally, the masonry block provides a quiet sense of permanence and durability – crucial in a high-use educational setting. With a raw yet refined presence, the material lends depth and integrity to the spatial composition. It works as both structure and surface – forming walls, grounding open-plan learning zones and framing key communal areas.

Large spans of glazing draw in natural light, while carefully placed openings encourage connection between indoors and out.

The natural tactility of the masonry is central to its success. Its tonal variation, combined with thoughtful articulation, generates rhythm and texture without distraction. In this way, the architecture remains honest and approachable – inviting young minds to inhabit the space with curiosity and confidence.

Spatially, the building unfolds as a sequence of purposeful volumes – from breakout zones and reading nooks to communal hubs and quiet retreats. Large spans of glazing draw in natural light, while carefully placed openings encourage connection between indoors and out. At every opportunity, the design champions interaction and adaptability to support the school’s vision of flexible, student-centred learning.

The GB Masonry becomes not just a practical solution, but a material that embodies the values of education – strength, openness and longevity.

Kosloff Architecture’s approach to Templeton Primary School is underpinned by restraint and intention. Rather than imposing form for form’s sake, the architecture recedes to serve its users. In doing so, it repositions design as a supportive framework – one that uplifts the spirit of a place without ever needing to shout.

For Brickworks, the project offers a compelling case study in commercial application. Here, the GB Masonry product becomes not just a practical solution, but a material that embodies the values of education – strength, openness and longevity.
