Located in Sydney’s Vaucluse, where the local schools and parklands inspire complementary designs, The New Classic exudes comfort. Without sacrificing luxury, its interiors reflect the rhythm of family life in harmony with the settled character of the neighbourhood.

“We wanted to create something timeless and grounded, but not traditional in the literal sense,” explains Joss Knight, founder of Studiojos. “The clients requested a house that is both elevated and relaxed, robust enough for everyday life and rich in detail. Longevity was key in terms of how the home would age aesthetically and how it would support the family over time.”

“The clients requested a house that is both elevated and relaxed, robust enough for everyday life and rich in detail.”

An intuitive spatial layout has been developed within the existing building envelope. “The entryway sets the tone of the house through its generous proportions, curated materials and ample natural light,” says Knight. “From there, the ground floor opens into a series of interconnected spaces including the living, cooking and dining areas. Instead of walls, these zones are subtly defined through changes in material.” With bedrooms upstairs and the basement dedicated to secondary spaces – additional lounge areas and utilities – the main living level remains calm and uncluttered. Honed limestone flooring extends from the interior through to the alfresco dining area, dissolving the visual boundary between indoors and out. Large openings further draw the outdoors into everyday life.

Thoughtful material choices give The New Classic a warm yet resilient feel. Alongside honed limestone floors and marble accents, European oak joinery and Almond Ash veneer introduce a softness befitting a family home. Brass and bronze finishes deepen the palette, revealing a rich patina over time. “One of the defining features of the project is the layered stone detailing, in particular the two-tone bullnose profiles that appear throughout the home,” says Knight. “They quietly tie spaces together while expanding upon the ‘new classic’ concept – they are familiar forms reinterpreted at a new scale. Alongside the custom joinery and integrated art, they reinforce the idea that every detail contributes to a cohesive whole.”

The New Classic is designed to be lived in, layered upon and shared.
