‘Touchwood The Hands that Touch the Timber’ at Melbourne Design Week
Elton Group and Tongue & Groove are co-presenting an exhibition that showcases the beauty, potential and sustainability of timber for this year’s Melbourne Design Week.
As part of this year’s Melbourne Design Week, Australian timber powerhouses Elton Group and Tongue & Groove have joined forces to present ‘Touchwood: The Hands that Touched the Timber’, an evocative exhibition that explores the beauty and creative potential of timber – one of the world’s most renewable resources – through the eyes of eight artisans and designers.
“We are thrilled to present ‘Touchwood’ as part of Melbourne Design Week,” say representatives from Elton Group and Tongue & Groove. “This exhibition celebrates the beauty and sustainability of timber while highlighting the craftsmanship and personal stories behind each piece. We invite attendees to join us in exploring the fascinating journey of timber and growing their appreciation for this remarkable natural resource.”
The exhibition – staged in the Tongue and Groove showroom in Richmond – features eight creatives, who are making and showing a piece that reflects their unique relationship with timber. They are: designer and artist Drew Abrahamson; writer and designer Hayley Curnow; furniture designer Ross Didier of Didier Design Studio; artist Tanya Hillman; industrial designer, artist and maker Edward Linacre; architectural and design photographer Shannon McGrath; and two emerging artisans: indigenous painter and sculptor Rochelle Morris, and Bolaji Teniola, an interdisciplinary designer and sculptor.
On both Saturdays of Melbourne Design Week, which runs from 23 May to 2 June, the eight creators will share insights about their works and their relationship to timber in Meet the Makers sessions at the showroom in Swan Street. The event is free and more details are available here.
For Elton Group, which supplies innovative, sustainable and authentic timber veneer and timber-based panels designed for interior surfaces and joinery, the exhibition is a natural extension of its commitment to collaboration. “Elton Group thrives on collaborative relationships with designers, clients and trusted trade partners,” says a spokesperson. “Dedicated to values of design, creativity, attention to detail and craftsmanship, we lead the industry in bringing natural surfaces to the built environment.”
Exhibition partner Tongue & Groove is one of Australia’s leading producers of solid-engineered oak flooring, using oak carefully sourced from responsible plantations across Europe and a unique, sustainable production process that makes the boards suitable for use not only on floors, but also stairs, walls, joinery, and ceilings.
