Vine Street draws from the original and crafted nature of its character home to propose a playful and grounded kitchen and dining area. State of Kin focuses on embedding a warmth through a traditional lens, using colour to animate the newly proposed space as a reflection of those that live within.

Located in North Perth, Vine Street becomes both an extension of the principles established within the existing home and a capture of a more contemporary future. Having recently been altered and expanded by the owners, the overall shell of the home sat awaiting the new insertions. Adding another layer of richness that still acknowledged the structure’s midcentury past, State of Kin carries through a similar materiality, injecting subtleties of colour and softened forms that see the home’s refined details bind everything together. Through extending and reworking the existing, the charm of the interior is brought forward as a key aspect to the home’s continued legacy.

As a generous space of its own, the kitchen and its role within the family home has transformed drastically over the last few decades.

As a generous space of its own, the kitchen and its role within the family home has transformed drastically over the last few decades. What previously sat concealed from view and seen more as a functional space has now become a destination in its own right. Now, as a place to bring occupants and visitors together, its presence and elements needed to facilitate daily functions. With newly formed joinery circling the three main walls of the space, a large, oversized island form now sits centrally. Combining both curved and linear elements, the island allows high level seating and acts as a preparation space at the same time.

As a balance between open and closed, and soft and hard edges, the kitchen comes together as a series of gestures that aim to complement one another. On one side, a curved ceiling detail breaks up and captures the stair that cuts through the floor above, and on the alternate wall, a calming and rectilinear junction is used, finished in plaster and paint. Carrying a similar tone of timber found in the flooring, the taller cabinets are flanked with a familiar warmth. As a nod to the home’s modernist past, an approach that combines statement timbers with pops of colour sees baby blue used to provide a sense of relief, allowing the overall use of timber to be given a both freshness and lightening in the process.

Using both elements from the past and the present, Vine Street combines a traditional focus with a refreshing modern sensibility. State of Kin has modernised the space by refining its parts whilst remaining connected to its previous iterations in both palette and geometry.
