Amid the rugged landscapes of Thy, Denmark, a solitary cottage emerges against the untamed coastal horizon.

From a distance, Vipp Cold Hawaii by Hahn Lavsen and Julie Moelsgaard Interior resembles a classic fisherman’s cottage. However, upon closer inspection, its repeated silhouette and geometric form reveal a modern interpretation of local architecture, embodying the essence of refined simplicity. The transformation of the original fishing cottage respects its heritage, maintaining the integrity of its geometry and orientation with east- and west-facing gables that shield from strong winds. Externally, insulated aerated blocks are whitewashed, with recessed glazing designed to blend subtly into the structure. A simple gable roof of overlapping, untreated Douglas fir is crafted to withstand the elements, ageing gracefully while harmonising the building with its natural surroundings over time.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an open-plan layout where internal spaces exude simplicity through limited materials and raw expression. Combined living, dining and kitchen areas flow seamlessly into one another. Large floor-to-ceiling windows flood the interiors with natural light, offering  views of the surrounding dunes and sea. These expansive vistas transform throughout the day and seasons, becoming dynamic, living artwork that emphasises the landscape.

Pursuing a palette of just five materials, the interiors are dominated by soft, muted hues and natural elements that cultivate a warm atmosphere. Timber features prominently, from exposed beams to classic stable doors and tall kitchen joinery, adding texture and subtle movement throughout the dwelling. The floors are lined with exposed brick laid in sand, a nod to the expansive beach visible from the windows. In the middle of the kitchen, the Vipp modular island bench is finished in detailed, anodised aluminium, providing a crisp contrast to the timber elements without overpowering them. A bespoke fireplace serves as a focal point, dividing the living and dining areas while grounding the space. These design approaches also extend into the bedrooms, where understated textiles and colours highlight the beauty of pared-back aesthetics. Modern Vipp furniture blends with locally sourced pieces, vintage treasures and works by local artists.
