The newly transformed Sofitel Sydney Wentworth features a rooftop terrace topped with a striking copper canopy that’s a masterpiece of architecture and engineering.

In the heart of Sydney’s CBD, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has undergone an impressive rejuvenation. The crowning jewel of the project is Wentworth Bar, a rooftop terrace designed by H&E Architects that seamlessly blends the hotel’s storied heritage with contemporary luxury. Cleverly reimagining the iconic building’s elevated courtyard area, the space has been transformed into a lush and alluring rooftop bar and restaurant.

“The outcome looks and feels like an extension of the original design intent – singularly unique and dynamic, yet it doesn’t impose on or overpower the existing building.”

Anchoring the space is a striking copper canopy, a structural masterpiece that both respects the past and redefines the future. “The copper roof is more than just a statement piece – it’s a tribute to the hotel’s history and a bold step forward in contemporary architectural design,” says H&E Architects co-principal Christopher Grinham. The canopy’s sweeping form echoes the building’s iconic horseshoe-shaped geometry, an architectural hallmark since it was completed in 1966. “The original design was absolutely the driver for the new design direction, from the copper to the geometry and the glazed perimeter skylights – they all respond to the base building.”

Creating such a structure was no simple feat. The design not only had to transform the courtyard into a functional and inviting space but needed to also address the challenging wind vortex. The team engaged a wind engineer and conducted wind modelling to develop a pavilion that could mitigate these effects. Drawing inspiration from the existing fabric, the solution incorporated the sinuous copper awning, a horseshoe-shaped facade and geometric floor tiling. “The outcome looks and feels like an extension of the original design intent – singularly unique and dynamic, yet it doesn’t impose on or overpower the existing building,” says Grinham.

“When viewed from above, the reflection of the surrounding building off the glass gives an almost water-like appearance to the perimeter.”

Crafted by Architectural Roofing and Wall Cladding (ARC), the canopy is an exemplar of precision engineering. “From the substructure and glazing to the intricate copper cladding, every component has been meticulously planned,” says ARC founder Juerg Wilk. Measuring 27 by 32 metres, the canopy’s copper surface is designed to develop a rich patina over time, adding a dynamic, evolving element to the hotel’s profile. Beneath it, a timber soffit brings warmth and softens the space while providing acoustic balance to enhance the overall ambience.

“When viewed from above, the reflection of the surrounding building off the glass gives an almost water-like appearance to the perimeter, with the copper floating inside it,” says Grinham. Due to heritage restrictions, the structure could not attach directly to the existing building. “We incorporated a series of circular columns to the perimeter of the skylight to create enough points of contact,” he explains. This process required complex BIM modelling to ensure all structural and service elements – lighting, AV, heating and fire systems – were seamlessly integrated.

Wentworth Bar’s interior enhances the dialogue between old and new. Marble finishes and American oak accents contrast with heritage frieze tiles, creating a sophisticated atmosphere. For the architect, the project is a testament to its ethos of collaboration. “We love the craft of building and working with those who are the best at their craft. The outcome speaks volumes to this process of collaboration,” says Grinham. By honouring the past while pushing design boundaries, H&E Architects and ARC have created a space that is both timeless and transformative.
