Wren House by Mim Design
Mim Design delicately preserved Wren House’s heritage charm while integrating a floor plan fit for contemporary living and the evolving needs of a young family.
Located in Yarraville, Wren House primarily serves as a sanctuary for its owners and reflects the dynamism of daily family life. There is a contrast between old and new elements within as well as light and dark. The purpose-driven design is integrated with personality through the curation of artwork, furniture and lighting that embed a connection to the owners. It is within the renovated and crisply restrained foundations that experimental pieces find their places. The name of the home is inspired by one of the preserved stain glass windows, within which the figure of a quaintly sized blue wren sits.
From traditional timber floors to the smoother and contrasting in-situ concrete that has a chalk-like texture, the interior spaces come together as a reprieve from the surrounding and more solid elements of the facade. The brick exterior connects the form to the industrial roots of the area, emanating the typical warehouses and sawtoothed silhouettes.
As the home is lit by the passing sun, it is the integration of elements such as the full-height glazing and integrated openings that ground the home in place. There exists both a feeling of immersion amid the surrounding landscape and a sense of separation from the streetscape once inside. The overall palette draws in a combination of jewel tones, saturated colours and muted hues to balance the surrounds.
Finding it’s place between both heritage and contemporary styles, Wren House tells a unique story of family, timelessness and the power of enduring design. By elevating key interactive elements and focusing on creating a home that will endure, Mim Design teaches a lesson in refinement and designing for the future.
