A modern rustic architectural design with an emphasis on sustainability in St Kilda, Australia.

Designed by Chiverton Architects, St Kilda House 1 was designed with the idea by the client, who wished to improve the relationship between the inside of the house and the outside.

With a brief from the client, who wanted to improve their relationship of his living areas with the backyard, and to add a bedroom and bathroom to the upstairs of the house, the idea was of this house was to design a sustainable space, with a natural look throughout, which looked bight and new, without an ostentatious look.

The ad-hoc construction was demolished at the rear of the building, and the bricks were saved to be re-used in the new design, which is a new rear to the house. This and a mix of passive and active systems made the house highly sustainable.

The house is full of sustainable initiatives, with key challenges of this design being, to ensure the new sustainable features were cool looking and fitting in on site.

Making the building highly sustainable was more of an opportunity than a challenge. The programmatic solution to the brief was pre-scripted because of the existing site and location characteristics.

The outcome is a modern space, styled with a rustic feel interior, which add to the comfort and warmth of the home.
