A Private Oasis – Pacific House by Penman Brown
Distinguishing old and new while creating a sense of cohesion, Pacific House is the home of interior designer Megan Brown, principal of Penman Brown. A generous new pavilion was added to the bungalow, capturing northern light and views of the landscape, enhancing the home’s connection to its coastal environment.
A palette of tactile natural materials was selected to complement the heritage of the original bungalow while imbuing a sense of contemporary coastal elegance. Speaking to the textures and tones of the landscape yet strictly adhering to a monochromatic palette, the design’s layered subtleties ensure the design is at once contemporary and timeless. Similarly, fixtures and loose furnishings were selected for their organic qualities, yet a focus on line as the overarching design emphasis ensures a sense of the modern and refined prevails.
Curves and arches found in the new pavilion echo those of the original bungalow, again creating unified design language throughout. Meanwhile, the bungalow itself was pared back, enabling a sense of simplicity to prevail that enhances the previously dark interior to feel more open, spacious and light.
Sitting proudly at the front of the new pavilion is an Escea fireplace, providing the family with an elegant place to gather in the early evening. Megan worked closely with Stoke Fireplace Studio Sydney throughout the selection and installation process, ultimately deciding upon an Escea gas fireplace perfectly suited to the stylish interior aesthetic of the family home, as well as the Sydney climate.
Through increasing the floor area and the amenity of the home through the renovation of the old and introduction of the new lofty pavilion, Pacific House is transformed into a functional and contemporary dwelling. And as Megan’s own home, Pacific Bungalow is a particularly personal expression – a project that represents not only Penman Brown’s design ethos but also Megan and her family’s lifestyle and personality.
