Residence R sees Nina Maya Interiors expertly reimagine the interior of a waterside home. Renovated with the intention to draw light into the home and direct attention out towards the view, Residence R emerges as a contemporary interpretation of a coastal dwelling.

Located in one of Sydney’s most desirable neighbourhoods, the luxury suburb of Northbridge, Residence R sits by a private inlet with access to views of the glittering water of the bay. Formerly owned by Bob Hawke and Blanche d’Alpuget, the original exterior of the house is retained out of respect for its heritage.

Driving Residence R towards a refined and minimalistic aesthetic, Nina Maya Interiors crafts a serene internal environment from which to enjoy the outside view as the main attraction. Floor-to-ceiling glazing across the home’s frontage engages residents in the external scenery whilst enabling natural light to flood the internal spaces. Furnishings are opulently plush and neutral coloured, supporting the lavish lifestyle expected within the home without forming a visual distraction.

The lighting features found within Residence R speak to an educated design philosophy that favours ambient light over oppressive overhead task lighting. Ambient lighting is emitted from multiple sources, integrated into the architecture of the home in a well-layered scheme. As warm light gently softens the contours of the residence, the light sources often take on a sculptural aspect – projecting from the walls in rounded form or lying flush and discreet against the foundations of the house.

In the materiality of Residence R, Nina Maya Interiors vision of a clean, elegant space is manifested. Charred and European oak sit harmoniously in a legible scheme that includes furnished brass and Italian marble. The material palette R uses curation to suggest quality, celebrating the way in which a small number of beautiful materials can create a symphony of texture when united in design.

With a lightweight, graphic staircase forming one of the largest features of the house, it is clear that Residence R is a purposefully breathable dwelling that embraces the natural environment. Nina Maya Interiors’ adroit treatment of the coastal home leaves residents firmly connected to its location.
