Refreshing Retail – Lee Mathews by Fiona Lynch
Lee Mathews clothing is at once stylish, timeless and functional. It is this ethos that also underlies Fiona Lynch’s interpretation of the brand’s Brisbane retail store in Fortitude Valley, where refined yet textural layers are woven into the fabric of the design.
The warmth of the interior beckons from across James Street. Once inside, the new fit-out is an inviting visual and tactile journey. Celebrating geometric shapes, natural tones and fibres along with local craftsmanship, Fiona Lynch creates an enticing and sculptural experience. A tangible materiality is applied throughout, seeing exposed brickwork continue within from the front façade and monolithic architectural forms – a nod to artist Donald Judd – that feel organic, not overpowering.

Stirring a sense of curiosity, an underlying dynamic interplay feeds the internal experience; rough and raw edges sit against clean lines for a sharp contrast while textured moments aim to soften. Custom lighting and integrated joinery provide a sense of structure, anchoring the interior, as the aluminium and textured sculptures balance the more tailored elements. The palette draws from neutral hues, seeing warm timbers and muted colours feed the space and allow the clothes to take focus. A pop of forest green in the fitting room differentiates and instils a calming ambience while subtly referencing the foliage on the store’s streetscape.
In keeping with the brand’s spirit, the new Lee Mathews store brings forth elements of both playfulness and sophistication. Polished pieces juxtapose against more tousled features, creating movement and personality that makes the space feel fresh and revitalised.
