Embracing both historic and modern design, Hecker Guthrie ushers Fitzroy North into a contemporary era through the use of a timeless palette that seamlessly binds elements, both old and new. Hecker Guthrie respectfully responds to the original ornate detailing of the home through a crafted approach, creating a restful retreat within that simultaneously connects to the natural surrounds.

Through a series of soft gestures, Fitzroy North comes together as a celebration of the Edwardian era with a refined and considered presence. Through a future-focused approach, the designer’s intent is to carry on the rich, historical narrative of the residence into the future, as well as the ornate details that shape the home. A new extension encourages shared liveability, whilst the existing, separated areas at the front are treated sensitively. The original, more formal spaces are marked by darker and immersive tones, which sees Hecker Guthrie bring a lighter approach to the new addition, instilling a sense of openness.

To honour the detailing in place, a consistent colour is applied throughout the dwelling, striking a balance between depth and function as well as a sense of retreat and togetherness. Restoring the heritage features is achieved through a monochromatic approach, allowing the interplay of light and creation of shadows to highlight elements without overpowering the interior. An overall sense of calm carries throughout the residence, from the entrance to the rear landscape, with layers of textural touchpoints elevating the sense of comfort the dwelling exudes.

As the residence is home to a young family, ensuring a level of flexibility for the future as well as opportunities for retreat was key. The retention and definition of the front rooms, in particular, will continue to play a significant role in supporting the family’s needs for years to come. Although muted, there is a playfulness and sense of curiosity in the way that the furniture, artwork and lighting is curated, and it adds moments of unpredictability throughout. It is also the careful introduction of colour together with such a unique form that enhances the home’s craftsmanship and cleverly expresses the youth of the owners.

Whilst the original residence was mostly handcrafted, the designer reinterprets such artisanal touches in a more contemporary context for Fitzroy North. Hecker Guthrie balances the robustness required for family living with a feeling of delicacy, resulting in a home that strikes its own chord of personal expression.
