KRONO
The work of Mauritius-based architectural practice L8 Studio, KRONO is a minimalist residence anchored in its sublime landscape through considered volumes, framed views and integrated outdoor spaces.
Located within the luxury Domaine de Palmyre estate on the west coast of Mauritius, KRONO by L8 Studio sits at the foot of Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, surrounded by rolling terrain and dense vegetation, with expansive mountain views. The project is not imposed on the site, but anchored within it, following the natural contours of the land and reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape through framed views and integrated outdoor spaces. The residence speaks to the studio’s ability to deliver refined minimalist architecture that resonates globally while remaining rooted in Mauritius’ topography and way of living.
L8 Studio’s principals envisioned a house that explored space, lifestyle and identity, marked by fluid everyday living, ease of supervision, family interaction and zones suited for entertaining. The architecture achieves this by balancing openness with intimacy, creating moments for both togetherness and retreat.
KRONO is composed as a series of clean, legible volumes arranged with deliberate precision to create a strong sculptural identity. Guided by a philosophy of restraint, the design avoids unnecessary complexity and, instead, focuses on proportion, light and spatial relationships. A century-old tree preserved on site acts as a central spatial anchor, shaping both the layout and experience of the house.
The boundary between inside and outside is minimal. Open-plan living, dining and kitchen spaces extend seamlessly toward the pool, terraces and mountain views. At the same time, vertical screening elements filter light and introduce rhythm, privacy and shadow throughout the day. The design responds intelligently to the Mauritian climate by capturing natural breezes for passive cooling, minimising heat gain through orientation and shading, and protecting the pool and terraces from the sun.
Materiality plays a central role in aiding durability and shaping atmosphere. Reinforced concrete was selected for its robustness and resilience in Mauritius’ climate while enabling the clean sculptural forms that define the project. Externally, a white finish reduces heat absorption. Timber cladding softens the mineral palette and establishes a warmer dialogue with the landscape, while black aluminium screens add contrast, depth and environmental control.
Working within the realities of a remote island context – where materials, logistics and resources are more constrained – demanded greater creativity and precision. KRONO delivered on that mindset, demonstrating how constraint can drive innovation.
From a small island in the Indian Ocean, L8 Studio has demonstrated that design is defined not by geography, but by clarity of vision, discipline and a deep understanding of space, light, proportion and material.
