La Dolce Villa by Composition
La Dolce Villa, the latest collection from Composition’s interior concept gallery and showroom, evokes memories of Italy within Sydney’s Northern Beaches while also highlighting the unique and curated sensibilities of Claire Perini, the founder and director.
The gallery and showroom feature an array of vintage artefacts, objects, prints and lithographic works. Claire curates the space herself, thriving in the process of discovering unique pieces and collaborating with emerging artists to introduce them to the market. Composition’s product offerings for the home include selected pieces from renowned brands such as Helle Mardahl, Stoff Nagel, Frama, Ester & Erik and Klong from Denmark, as well as items from INBED and Flung Studio Pottery, among others. Recent art collections include original lithographs and prints from notable designers like Matisse, Calder and Picasso, alongside a large assortment of original artworks, primarily focusing on CoBrA art and original creations. Additionally, the gallery and showroom boast a selection of architecture literature and rare design books.
Launching two main collections each year in addition to smaller capsule releases, the debut collection of more than 300 pieces, currently available in-store, named La Dolce Villa, reflects the warmth and tactile nature of classic Italian design. This collection of objects and artefacts draws inspiration from the Italian concept of ‘the sweet life’, presenting small pieces that invite appreciation of the subtle moments of beauty within the home. With a focus on storage objects, La Dolce Villa harmonises with Composition’s latest addition of Helle Mardahl pieces. Prices for items in this collection range from $200 to $10,000.
“La Dolce Villa was conceived throughout my last journey to Italy,” says Claire. “My intent was to bring this textural environment, the warm layers of materials connecting that, to evoke the summer siesta and the sweetness of enjoying the simple things in life,” she explains. “As I continued my journey to other countries, this was at the forefront of my selections. All the pieces within the collection play on the idea of our European ancestors, the nostalgia that their interiors reflected… the tapestry of their life story.”
Claire particularly cherishes the metre-high hand-woven cane and rattan urn, along with the Art Deco 1940s cane club chairs, sourced from France, among her favourite pieces from the collection. “Timeless craftsmanship plays on the notion of ancient arts but is represented through a different material than expected,” says Claire about the urn. “I love the way the weave moves around the body of the form and changes its patterning to present this texturally rich but simple object.” Claire also reflects on the chairs: “The deep seat and the backrest with cane woven in alternating directions create interesting depth for the eye to catch. My favourite element is the turned spheres of walnut that the form rests upon.”
La Dolce Villa stands as a rich and unique addition to Composition’s gallery and showroom, beautifully complementing its offerings. “This collection finally completes the eclectic aesthetic I have been aiming towards over the last five years,” says Claire. “I have always been drawn to an interior that reflects one’s own life story, and with the addition of La Dolce Villa, the showroom now speaks more strongly to that.” Each object within a home encapsulates a memory or a specific moment in time, ultimately mirroring an individual’s sense of self. This is a concept that Composition consistently inspires and reinforces with each visit and every new collection.
