Created for a couple in their 60s, the home was conceived as both a gathering place for friends and family and a refuge after long days spent skiing and hiking. Comfort and durability were essential, especially given the region’s harsh alpine climate. Guided by a spirit of discovery, Elizabeth Rose Jackson designed interiors that balance sophistication with a sense of whimsy. Longtime patrons of the arts, the owners sought spaces that could accommodate their collection while reflecting their curatorial eye.

Comfortable yet full of personality and ease, the home effortlessly captures the owners’ zest for life and the warmth of this mountain retreat.

The plan divides the home into two primary volumes: a dark timber-clad wing for communal spaces and a stone-clad wing for the private sleeping quarters. Two glazed connectors join the volumes, mediating between public and private life while framing a central courtyard. Throughout, floor-to-ceiling windows maximise views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks and maintain a constant connection to the landscape.

Inside, wide oak floors and stained hemlock walls and ceilings establish a cohesive material palette that reimagines the traditional ski chalet in contemporary terms. The furnishings introduce moments of colour and texture, while generous seating arrangements, including wide-armed sofas, mountain-facing swivel chairs and upholstered armchairs, anchor the living spaces. Materials such as plaid, boiled wool, alpaca and velvet add warmth, underscoring the home’s tactile, welcoming atmosphere.

The bedrooms are deliberately pared back, encouraging guests to gather in the dwelling’s shared spaces. The primary suite is serene, with a palette of warm whites and soft blues, while guestrooms follow suit with pale walls and minimal detailing. By contrast, the communal spaces carry a more light-hearted spirit, drawing on Anglo-American camp traditions. The kitchen combines honey-toned wood with British-inspired green cabinetry and crackled ceramic accents. In the powder room, saturated floral wallpaper, navy wainscoting and a green stone vanity create a jewel–like moment and infuse the home with a hint of summer camp nostalgia.

At the heart of the residence, the living room layers custom plaid sofas, sculptural lighting and the couple’s collected artworks, including a feathered piece acquired during a trip to New Zealand. Comfortable yet full of personality and ease, the home effortlessly captures the owners’ zest for life and the warmth of this mountain retreat.
