Sonata
With Sonata, Orr Made restores the spirit of the far-north Queenslander – a family home of connection and creativity, set against a tropical beachside backdrop.
Surrounded by towering greenery in the coastal suburb of Port Douglas, Sonata is a faithful rejuvenation of a 1990s design, carrying forward the spirit of the Queensland vernacular, where thresholds dissolve into the landscape and the ocean is always within reach. Easy-going and honest, it’s a dwelling shaped by local craft – a joyful place for respite and entertaining.
Designed and built by Orr Made, the home responds to the energetic personalities of a young family, exuding creativity and togetherness through considered interventions. “Our clients sought a place that would seamlessly blend the practicalities of contemporary living with the home’s nostalgic character, providing spaces that resonate deeply with their values and personal style,” says practice co-founder Rhiannon Orr. The reinvention becomes a canvas for a curated collection of treasured art and objects, in celebration of craft and cultural storytelling.
Guided by an existing framework of external connection, a trio of once-isolated pavilions is delicately stitched together by generous, light-filled breezeways around a central communal sphere for year-round living. “Designed in a quintessentially tropical style, the original house featured pavilion-style rooflines, louvred windows and crazy-paved walkways for climate-responsive, open-air living,” explains Orr. Serving as a strong foundation for new interventions, these typological influences are reimagined as playful expressions of sanctuary, sympathetic to the north Australian locale.
“With a deep personal connection to horticulture, the client – a passionate gardener – prioritised the landscape in reimagining the property.”
Drawing from its verdant surroundings, the dwelling embraces a refreshing palette of soothing whites, rich timbers and tactile, earthy gestures. “The client’s appreciation for quality materials and refined detailing opened the door to a broad exploration of textures, tones and finishes,” recalls Orr. With robust, carefree surfaces, an enveloping sense of calm permeates the home – a relaxed, unfussy response to its beachside setting. “At the heart of the palette is natural stone, selected not only for its inherent beauty but for the way it strengthens the connection to the lush exterior environment.” Vibrant Smeraldo quartzite from Artedomus provides a focal hero within, its glistening emerald hues recalling the curvilinear outdoor pool in a reciprocal dance with nature.
Outdoors, the home becomes a leisurely setting where family and friends gather to enjoy the simple pleasures of swimming and conversation. “With a deep personal connection to horticulture, the client – a passionate gardener – prioritised the landscape in reimagining the property,” explains Orr. What was once a neglected, overgrown site now embodies the essence of a tranquil coastal lifestyle. Sandy-hued split-face pavers encircle the garden in reference to the site’s bluestone relics, softened by meticulous detailing and trelliswork within an enclosure of leafy vegetation.
Sonata becomes an exercise in conscious reinvention, where the essence of the past finds meaningful expression within the new.
Comprised as a functional residence for respite and entertaining, Sonata becomes an exercise in conscious reinvention, where the essence of the past finds meaningful expression within the new. It’s a transformative home that nurtures the creativity and spirit of its inhabitants – an ode to the richness of simple beachside living.
