Textured Charm – Spanish Mission House by Matilda Reed Interiors
Incorporating a contemporary openness alongside its historic character, Spanish Mission House is reworked to integrate a strong internal presence within. Matilda Reed Interiors combines moments of heightened texture with an underlining sense of restraint to ensure the family home is ready for the forthcoming chapters.
Originally built in the 1930s, the style of the residence remained intact and was restored to allow for its existing narrative to continue for years to come. By referencing art deco styles throughout the home, new additions are proposed to enhance existing elements and align with a contemporary context. The established surrounds and existing features were crafted through a modern lens, seeing the opening and lightening of spaces. Balancing old and new, as well as social and private spaces, Matilda Reed Interiors ensures the resulting house captures both the personalities of the occupants and its place.
The choice was made to emphasise the transition between the existing and the new. As a result, a consistent palette was created that binds the eras yet allows the home to remain true to its origins. A newfound flow allows the internal spaces to lead into one another, dissolving some of the existing thresholds. Drawing inspiration from its art deco roots, the house features newly introduced curves that sit comfortably with other geometric forms, emphasising a playfulness among the more linear gestures of the residence’s outer limits.
The interior of the home is reworked entirely, and layering is used to add saturation and dimension. Using furniture, artwork and lighting, personality and colour is brought inward, as the movability of these pieces allows for flexibility of space and function as needed. This curation acts as both a personal expression and a means to bring energy to the muted base. By engaging with the site in its entirety, openings that delineate the indoor and outdoor spaces were prioritised and expanded, allowing for more natural light and ventilation. This also enables the home to breathe with the surrounding landscape and respond to the changing seasons throughout the year.
Through layering warmth and familiarity, the character-rich past of Spanish Mission House coexists seamlessly with newly introduced, contemporary additions. By establishing a base that focuses on texture and subtleties, Matilda Reed Interiors creates the ideal haven for the home’s future chapters.
