Intertwining Utility with Narrative – Weaver Cabinet by DesignByThem
Australian design studio DesignByThem, has released the Weaver Cabinet by Elliat Rich. The sculptural cabinet seamlessly combines utility, narrative and form, showcasing the rich imagination of the designer and the creative coalescence of way and design.
Elliat Rich is an artist and designer based in Mparntwe, Alice Springs. Also working as a producer, researcher, experimenter and resource developer, Elliat’s design process is defined by an imaginative translation between materials and culture that considers form as well as the broader context of power and social value.
Weaver is a sculptural cabinet that presents a distinctive and striking addition to any space.
The cabinet is designed by Elliat for DesignByThem, founded by industrial designers Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis in 2007. The brand is known for its curated collection of furniture, accessories and lighting characterised by a uniquely Australian perspective, timeless aesthetic and distinct playfulness.
Weaver is a sculptural cabinet that presents a distinctive and striking addition to any space. Existing in the blurred space between object and creature, the design features crafted oak timber joinery veiled by hand-dyed, UV-stable nylon woven locks. These locks create a sense of intrigue, whilst also covering the mess that may hide beneath the veil. The design also features aluminium handles with a two-pack polyurethane finish. The cabinet comes in copper or ultra blue, with custom colours available upon specification.
The concepts that lie beneath these design choices are a continuation of Elliat’s exploration of the mythological entity.
The concepts that lie beneath these design choices are a continuation of Elliat’s exploration of the mythological entity. Elliat says, “Weaver incorporates tactility, colour and unconventional combinations of materials as a way of perforating through the confines and expectations of the everyday. Weaver exists at multiple scales and times, continuously weaving together all the patterns that make up our planet.”
“It was a pleasure to work with Elliat getting this beautiful creature off the ground. Elliat is a true creative, ever passionate and true to her craft. I love that this piece is so different but still feels as part of the DesignByThem collection,” says DesignByThem Co-Founder Sarah Gibson.
Nick Karlovasitis, DesignByThem Co-Founder, agrees. “We’re excited to expand DesignByThem’s design language with Weaver and bring another innovative product by an Australian designer to market.”
Guided by curiosity and creativity, the Weaver Cabinet by DesignByThem is the physical effect of an inspiring collaboration of the possibilities of imagination, consideration of form and the utility of function.
