Once comprised of a series of disconnected spaces within, West Village Apartment has been reimagined through a combined traditional and contemporary approach. McKay enhances the journey of movement from within, allowing for more considered internal connections that then flow out to the surrounds.

Originally a dark and moody bachelor pad, West Village Apartment has been transformed into a haven of elevated living, capturing the essence of its urban setting. Located within the quintessential West Village of Manhattan, New York, the residence emerges as a canvas for the collected treasures of the young professional couple who reside there. The process of reworking the existing three-bedroom apartment was guided by how the occupants desired to conduct their daily routine. Stemming from the central living area – the heart of the home – are a series of expanded and contracted spaces, their functionality balanced and reflected in layering warm elements and materials experienced as one moves throughout the apartment.

A curated material palette forms the foundation of the newly defined home, with ethereal Venetian plaster walls in off-white acting as the perfect canvas for incoming natural light to dance across the surface. With the warmth of natural timber in the integrated joinery and flooring, the spaces are consistently bound, lightened and made to feel more generous as a result. The sense of restraint with introduced colours is purposeful and allows for a sense of expression whilst not overwhelming the interior. Bespoke furniture, lighting and objects also add a sculptural layering to ensure an ease of movement is felt in each zone.

Designed pieces ensure the furniture can be functionally flexible within the existing parameters of the apartment. The integrated banquette seating in the kitchen, bedheads and leather game table are uniquely designed to suit, combining materiality and form that seamlessly ties in with the style of accompanying pieces. Furthermore, crafting a comfortable and welcoming residence was key, especially one that supports decompressing from an active day in the city. Therefore, a private sanctuary that captured the spirit of the occupants was created, which is ultimately what makes the house a home.

Whilst open and shared living spaces are familiar to contemporary homes, what sets West Village Apartment apart is that it is a sculpted and animated reflection of its owners. By establishing connections and a sense of vibrancy within, McKay blends moments of boldness with tranquillity and ease ¬to create the perfect retreat within a cityscape.
