Dare Property Group, Mim Design and MHNDU have combined efforts to create Kalypso, the ultimate seaside multi-residential building in Tamarama, New South Wales.

Positioned on a crest, Kalypso is a new apartment building that looks out towards its coastal surrounds. With easy access to the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk, Kalypso is also only steps away from a small yet popular inlet that has become a well-liked surf beach. As the multi-residential building was replacing an old Art Deco structure that was once a backpacker hostel, MHNDU has created an exterior design that nods to the past. Moreover, the mixed architecture of the surrounding homes and buildings further complements the form.

Due to the apartment’s position, Kalypso is afforded views to the north, east and south, which allows sunlight inwards year-round. The relaxing seaside apartment also enjoys sea breezes during summer, enriching the apartments’ connections to the elements. For the design and architectural objective, the team wanted to target a high level of luxury and amenity through form and finishes. When they began to work on the project, they imagined the people that would want to live in these apartments and found that it helped to inspire the material selection.

Though the luxurious finishes and products enhance the interior, it is the amount of space that is given to each relaxing seaside apartment that makes them feel more like individual homes. Stepping into Kalypso on the ground level, guests and owners walk down a compacted corridor that mirrors the waves of the ocean. Each level also glimpses out to the ocean, which serves as a reminder of location. Alongside the apartments, Kalypso also features a penthouse and sub-penthouse that offers three bedrooms. Located on the north-east corner, the sub-penthouse welcomes with softened walls that lead into the large living zone. From here, views of the Pacific Ocean take hold and the living, dining and kitchen zone is bathed in natural light from morning until afternoon.

For the hub of the apartment, the kitchen acts as both a working space and gathering spot. There is also a featured cellar that enriches the owners’ experience by anchoring the dining room and opening out the view line from the hallway. As well as using marble in the kitchen that represents ocean whitewash, Mim Design has employed natural stone finishes and copper detailing in the cellar.

Together, Dare Property Group, Mim Design and MHNDU have created a luxury multi-residential apartment block that deeply connects to its beachside surrounds through form and materials.
