What advice would you give to young people looking to buy?
You don’t have to buy a property to live in. Buy what you can afford and consider renting it out if you don’t want to live in the suburb you can afford at the time. Purchasing land is also an option in building wealth. Lastly, don’t take too much notice of other’s ‘perfect’ holidays, cars and clothes on Instagram. If purchasing a property is important to you, that’s what’s you should focus on.
What’s your number one tip for someone selling their property?
Presentation is number one. Number two is to pick an agent you can trust and work with because it is a team effort. Number three is to have realistic expectations about your sale price. Do your homework and look at houses you think might be similar to yours in order to be realistic.
What is the favourite property you’ve sold and why?
54 Caledonia Street, Paddington, architect Vivian Fraser’s own home that had been sympathetically updated. A lot of buyers saw the property and simply didn’t understand the beauty of the architecture, but the main players – vendors and buyer – got it.
What do you think buyers are looking for in new apartment developments?
Those with amenities, house-like proportions and outdoor areas. A concierge, gym, pool and tennis courts are all of interest along with a great, well-connected location.
What Sydney suburbs do you think will experience the biggest growth over the next 12 months?
Any suburbs that have something that cannot be replaced – harbour or city views, conservation areas, beach views or proximity to the beach. In a city like Sydney without enough transport infrastructure, you also have to add public transport to that list.
